As winter begins to fade and spring starts to bloom, there’s no better place to embrace the last blasts of winter than Banff, Alberta. Nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, Banff is a breathtaking national park that offers stunning views, exciting outdoor adventures, and some of the best skiing experiences in the world. This past spring, the urge to hit the slopes took us to Banff Sunshine and Lake Louise, where we enjoyed fantastic skiing as well as the vibrant character of the town.
From fresh powder to breathtaking landscapes, here’s a detailed look at our spring skiing adventures that made this trip truly unforgettable.
Banff Sunshine: A Skiing Paradise
Banff Sunshine is well-known for its diverse terrain and panoramic views that leave skiers breathless. With over 3,300 acres of skiable terrain, it caters to both beginners and experienced skiers alike.
As soon as we hopped on the Sunshine Gondola, our excitement grew. The ride itself became an adventure as the gondola ascended and revealed spectacular vistas of the surrounding peaks. At the top, we were greeted by crisp mountain air and sprawling landscapes waiting to be explored.

Once we strapped on our skis, we headed for a variety of runs suitable for all skill levels. The groomed slopes were in impeccable condition, and the occasional hidden powder stash provided exhilarating surprises. One highlight was the ‘Goat’s Eye’ mountain. As we descended, we couldn't help but be awed by the beauty surrounding us. We had several foggy days, but being immersed in the Canadian Rockies was so incredible.
Sunshine's runs were very wide open, so you could easily dip from a blue to a black run and back again in some spots. This was a win for our family since I like the blue groomers and our boys love the steep black diamonds. We could still ski together but be on runs that we all enjoy.

Lake Louise: Majestic Skiing Experiences
Next, we headed to Lake Louise, a legendary destination in the Canadian skiing scene, known not only for its skiing but also for its stunning turquoise glacier-fed lake that beautifully contrasts with the snow-covered mountains.
Arriving at Lake Louise Ski Resort was like stepping into a winter paradise. The parking was easy, and warm, cozy lodges welcomed us, creating an inviting atmosphere. We wasted no time gearing up and hitting the slopes.
The variety of runs here is impressive. With options ranging from groomed cruisers to challenging backcountry terrain, we tackled a few blue runs that combined thrilling descents with rewarding views. We spent two days here, but could have easily added a third. One day it was snowing so hard, we had to cut our day short because of visibility. We warmed up both days at Temple Lodge.

Lake Louise is a short drive from the ski resort, so we made a quick stop to check it out. They have a nice parking lot with bathrooms where you can park and walk a short distance to the lake. It was warm and foggy out, so ice skating was closed, but you could still see how beautiful the lake and surrounding area is.
Exploring the Town of Banff
A stroll along Banff Avenue led us past numerous local shops, where we indulged in some retail therapy. From unique souvenirs to high-quality ski gear, the shops offered a little bit of everything. We would usually get off the slopes in time to hit up a happy hour before heading back to our hotel.
In addition to shopping and dining, we decided to discover the natural beauty surrounding the town. Just a short drive away, we found Johnston Canyon. This was a great activity to do on one of our ski days that was cut short because of warm weather. There are a lot of options as far as length of hike, and we went with the the one to the Lower Falls. It was a great way to stretch our leg muscles after several days of skiing since it is an easy, paved trail.

A Lasting Impression
Our spring skiing trip to Banff was nothing short of amazing. Exploring both Banff Sunshine and Lake Louise allowed us to experience a unique blend of diverse skiing, picturesque landscapes, and rich cultural enjoyment right in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.
Whether you’re an avid skier or just looking to appreciate the beauty of spring in the mountains, Banff has something for everyone. With its charming town, variety of restuarants, and endless outdoor activities, it should certainly be on your travel list.
As winter's chill melts into spring warmth, pack your bags, grab your skis, and prepare for an exhilarating adventure in Banff! This stunning destination is sure to create lasting memories. We cannot wait to check it out one summer!
